Disability & Chronic Illness

Disabilities, both physical or developmental, and chronic illnesses can be a great challenge both for the afflicted individual and/or their family and caregivers. A disability or chronic illness can cause depression, anger, anxiety, and a diminished sense of control. At MRL Counseling we are uniquely qualified to understand the emotional, psychological, and physical challenges that a disability or chronic illness can have on the person themselves and their loved ones. Because we know that the family system is often affected when family members experience disability or chronic illness, MRL Counseling takes a family systems approach and makes every attempt to include the family in the treatment process if the client desires. Family members of those affected by disability or chronic illness are also welcoming to contact MRL Counseling for his or her own support goals.

and chronic illness on both a professional and a personal level, which makes him empathetic to trying to cope with the unique day-to-day challenges of dealing with a chronic health condition and trying to lead as fulfilling and active a life as possible. Although we’ve found, to our regret, that there are very few counselors in the area fully equipped to support clients and their families dealing with disability and/or chronic illness, we take great pride in our ability to provide high quality services to individuals who are suffering from any and all forms of disability and chronic illness.

While disability or chronic illness may be a big part of your life, we believe that your condition or diagnosis does not have to define you. Because we know that each person and situation is different, there is no cookie-cutter approach to providing treatment for individuals at MRL Counseling. Whether our clients have been disabled his or her
whole life or recently received a life-changing diagnosis, we treat each individual with great sensitivity to their individual needs and situation, and seek to treat the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of each client. For example, every effort is made to make the therapy environment as comfortable and relaxed as possible and to ensure that the treatment we offer is adapted to the needs and situation of each client. Some treatment modalities that we have found useful for past clients include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which can help clients reframe their ways of thinking about his or her situation, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reintegration (EMDR), which has been found to help with chronic pain, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Guided Imagery techniques, which can help clients achieve a state of relaxation.

MRL Counseling is also uniquely aware that new challenges can arise

depending on where the person is at in his or her stage of life: from senior citizens experiencing newly diminished capacities to individuals who have been disabled since birth and are embarking on a new phase of life, like entering high school, we have experiencing understanding and providing supportive resources to improve our client’s overall quality of life.

The clinician and staff at MRL Counseling are compassionate to each individual and his or her needs and strive to provide the best care possible for all of varied clients. As lifelong advocates for increased respect and understanding for individuals with disabilities, we are proud to comply with the ADA and other relevant laws regarding equal treatment and equitable accommodations for all. Please feel free to contact our office with any of your questions about our services for individuals with disabilities.
